From Pedagogy to Publication: Involving Students in a Documentary History of Their College’s Educational Philosophy
Presented to Northern Great Plains History Conference, Minnesota State University Mankato, Mankato, MN, 22 September 2011.
By Ryan C. MacPherson, Ph.D.
Abstract
Undergraduate students completed a series of projects, 2006-2010, culminating in the publication of a 450-page historical anthology that documents the educational philosophy of the Minnesota-based church body which operates Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. Student contributions include section introductions, biographical entries, and critical footnotes based upon oral interviews and archival research. This hands-on service learning experience, which focused on the history of Norwegian-American Lutherans who settled in the Midwestern United States, may serve as a model for projects at other institutions.
