Studying Luther’s Large Catechism

Summer Bible Study

Ryan C. MacPherson, Ph.D.

Martin Luther, Preface to the Small Catechism (1529):

After you have taught them this short catechism, then take up the Large Catechism and give them also a richer and fuller knowledge.

Luther's SealMartin Luther published two catechisms in 1529: the Small Catechism to assist parents and pastors in the instruction of children, and the Large Catechism to provide adults with additional training in the chief articles of the Christian faith.

In the Formula of Concord (1577), Lutheran theologians called these writings “the layman’s Bible” because they so clearly presented the Scriptural teachings of Law and Gospel.

Join Dr. Ryan C. MacPherson for a twelve-week Bible study following the outline of Christian doctrine presented in Luther’s Large Catechism: The Ten Commandments, Apostles Creed, Lords Prayer, Baptism, and Lords Supper.
